I’ve been reading about some saiga 12 customizations out there, and some mention “ramp barrel” What and why is that?

Barrel ramping can relate to virtually any firearm. Basically it involves enlarging, tapering, relieving and or taking metal out of rear of chamber (towards breechface side), in a funnel shaped pattern. It aids in feeding rounds. After the gunsmith takes out the right ammount of metal he will usually mirror finish polish the chamber.Care must be exploited as taking out too much metal is very dangerous.Ramping helps clear the job of feeding less than perfect s

otgun rounds as althought the S12 is extremely reliable is has been known to go on low quality ammo. Ramping helps but does not completely fix this. Also some say, it aids in cycle rate although unless you are racing you likely wont notice the difference. Many DIY home gunsmiths will try this. The problem with ramping the S12 is to do it properly, one needs to remove the barrel from receiver, otherwise its near inconceivable to relieve the barrel without also releiving the trunion (part that attaches barrel to receiver). Relieving trunion in Saiga is a NO NO as it will weaken the place that gets most of focus during recoil. The other problem is to take and replace barrel from Trunion is a precise operation that requires a LOT of force best done with HD hydraulic press, a part of equipment most folks dont have access to.No question if done correctly Barrel ramping for S12 is a big improvement but be careful who does it.
